I was thinking the other day while I was on vacation about the MAC address vs IP Address!

The IP Address helps us a lot monitor players and such but lots of players will use spoofers etc to be able to have multiple accounts as well as come back on servers to cause trouble etc!

This is where the MAC (Backup) would come into hand? As well as checking the IP Address to see if there has already been X amount of accounts created before making a new one it could check the MAC address to be sure that there is not just an IP spoof going on etc.

I know there are MAC spoofers out there etc but if the players don't know that its the MAC address being checked they won't necessarily already know how to get away with it, especially if the staff doesn't tell them it checks via MAC Address?

Once again this is just a theory of mine!

A local server I played used to distribute a Loader which was used to handshake with the server in order to validate the player client and ensure that he is not using Razor, UOSteam or Injection.
Players used to bypass the MAC verification, fake the handshake and even bypass the ingame anti-macro.

You don't have to rely just on MAC address and IP, maybe you can find other signature on the player computer like hardware serial number.
Using such thing implies to force the player to use your loader and is invasive, many will say that they do not agree with that.
Unfortunately internet-connections does not allow you to retrieve the remote MAC, a kind-of loader would be required

I have read a little on MAC addresses and C# and I seen some cases where Client/Server were able to send the MAC information but I have not tried it whatsoever but I sure will when I get home.

I would like to keep it where I can lock it down from my end but still keep it so that the players just have to use UOSteam, Razor, or whatever Assistant that they would like to use.

Also, I know that some people will filter through but this will narrow it down I am for sure as there are not many who would be able to find out that the MAC is also automatically being checked on creation/login if we don't make them aware etc. Even if they are aware in some scenarios they would have to run an IP Spoofer and a Mac Spoofer which is too hard for most people IMO.
