I was looking through new posts as i do every time i'm online.
This post got me thinking...
Up to date info on how to modify / create custom maps?
Got thinking about storage ideas.
Most of the ServUO community who run or just dabble with ServUO will have files, probably a lot of files. In the above post i read this from 'golfin' and he mentioned about files and storage, about 20-30GB of data.
Some of you have probably heard about setting up or owning a NAS server, and something called TrueNAS. Basically a place to use as a storage server on your local network, or a media server, or use it for whatever you need. I've recently setup my own NAS server using an older PC i had that i ran my old UO server from back when i messed around with this stuff.
Anyways, theres also apps you can install onto the NAS server and one in particular called NextCloud. This is like having your own cloud server but if setup correctly your able to open it up to the web and be able to access it yourself or allow others to also have access to it via the web.
My own setup consists of about 4Tb of storage where i keep backups of files, old RunUO servers i've had films and other 'stuff' that i wanted to keep. The x4 4Tb drives are setup in something called Mirror format so if a drive fails the other 3 will keep the data safe etc etc etc. I've only dumped a bit of what i'm keeping onto the NAS server and looks like i'll have alot of spare storage space left so i was thinking now i'm messing around with NextCloud it could in theory be opened up to public access and allow people to use it as a form of cloud server.
I guess it's just a suggestion where if a random member of the ServUO community wanted to, why not someone maybe run / host a cloud server for the ServUO community. At the very least you'd be able to grab files you wanted or even store new files there.
There are the obvious things like... it needs to be on and online 24/7, security of course and who ran it would need a certain level of commitment to keeping it running in the long term.
Anyway, it was just a thought
