Dear community,

I am wondering what are the key clients and requirements regarding file format and map sizes?
For example, I used 5.0.9.1 on RunUO 1.0 and I know there is a gap with the next version because of the .mul map size (I don't remember details).

Could you share your knowledge here about this?
(for information, I plan to use a darkshard map, but I want to make sure to use the right client version)
 
That is the point indeed: what does it mean "older clients"? What are the formats/size of "newer clients"?
 
How much you know wasn't very clear from the start. UO since beginning had a bunch of updates called expansions and some of those expansions changed map count and map dimensions. Older clients usually means everything before version 7 :) in some cases anything before 7.0.24.x which was one of the last versions supporting mostly mul files.

After version 7.x.x.x uop format was added to the mul format. With time more and more files were converted to uop format.
For quite some time now uo has two client versions classic and enchanced. classic uo is the one that 99% people use when it comes to free shards. Enchanced client has limited support. Around 2008 there was also Kingdom Reborn client but it was obsoleted and some time later Enchanced client replaced it.

UOP files in classic client are just mul files packed into UOP. So those can be unpacked and re-packed and editing is usually easy.
UOP files in enchanced client are completely new thing.

Main maps 0 and 1 were expanded in ML so are little wider. After that I think only one or two new maps were added and that's it. Map sizes are fixed and hardcoded in the client so starting from ML you need the main maps to be wider. That's it.
 
I noted this:
  • Pre MondainLegacy Map0 size 6144x4096
  • Post MondainLegacy Map0 size 7168x4096
I just didnt noted what is the first version of MondainLegacy...

I think also that after 5.0.9.1, Map0 & Map1 are different files while before it was the same map (just statics differed).
 

Versions depends a bit on the client line because up to version 7 there were multiple client versions. So there was Samurai empire line, gold line, AoS, ML line and probably something else too. Which means that each of those had different set of patches.

Yes at some point after v3 or closer to 4 map1 was added as separate file but it's not that important.
